Release, Acknowledgement and Consent: I agree to volunteer for the Scotiabank Calgary marathon (hereinafter called the "event"). I understand that my volunteering for the event may involve risk of: physical injury to myself or others, damage to my property or other consequences as a result of weather, event equipment, my own actions or actions of others whether negligent or otherwise. In consideration of The Calgary Marathon Society permitting me to volunteer at the event, I hereby release myself and my heirs, assigns, guardians, administrators and executors and from all liability and waive any and all claims for damages (whether for personal injury, death, illness, property damage and/or property loss), including claims for negligence, which I may have as a result of my volunteering for this event, against the following: The Calgary Marathon Society and its directors, event employees; event contractors; race organizers including the race director; event volunteers, event sponsors; event producers; officials; vendors; athletes; and all provincial, municipal, town and federal government agencies who have provided permits for the event or in which a portion of the event takes place (hereinafter referred to as the ?released parties?). I consent to the use of personal information contained in this volunteer form for the purpose of soliciting my participation in, or volunteering at, future Calgary Marathon Society events. I also consent to the use of any of my name and photos of me from the event in any publicity associated with the event and in any form of promotional material for the Calgary Marathon Society. In signing this volunteer form, I acknowledge that I have read this release, acknowledgement and consent in its entirety, that I understand and agree to be bound by its terms, and that I am signing voluntarily without duress or undue influence from anyone.
The parent or legal guardian who signs the release, acknowledgement and consent on behalf of a minor, incapacitated and/or mentally challenged person (hereinafter "said person"),hereby acknowledges that he or she has the legal capacity and authority to act on behalf of said person to legally bind said person to the release, acknowledgement and consent. The parent or legal guardian who signs the release, acknowledgement and consent agrees to indemnify and hold harmless the released parties for any expenses incurred, claims made, or liabilities assessed against them as a result of any insufficiency of legal capacity or authority to act on behalf of said person in the execution of the release, acknowledgement and consent.

  • Package Assembly & Expo Prep: Help with the set up and tear down of the Fitness Expo.
  • Packet Pick-up: Help distribute runner bags/shirts/bibs to runners and walkers.
  • Information Booth: Welcome visitors to the Fitness Expo and answer general questions.
  • Volunteer Check-in: Check in volunteers as they arrive and maintain volunteer room.

Friday, May 24th, 2019

Saturday, May 25th, 2019

  • Packet Pick-up: Help distribute runner bags/shirts/bibs to runners and walkers.
  • Information Booth: Welcome visitors to the Fitness Expo and answer general questions.
  • Race Recycler: Help make the Scotiabank Calgary Marathon "Green". Volunteer to ensure all recyclables, compostables and re-usable items are properly diverted to reduce waste at the Scotiabank Calgary Marathon
  • Volunteer Check-in: Check in volunteers as they arrive and maintain volunteer room.
  • Venue/Equipment Crew: Provide general help with overall equipment set up, heavy lifting required.
  • Finish Line Crew: Finish line set up as needed, heavy lifting required.
  • Course Logistics Crew: pick up vehicles (must be 25 years of age and have valid driver's license); assemble equipment to be distributed on course; distribute equipment on course Sunday morning. This position requires a two day commitment.
  • Sign Crew: Pick up vehicles (must be 25 years of age and have a valid driver's license); assemble and organize sign distribution for race day, distribute and pick up signs on course race morning. This position requires a two day commitment.

Race Day Sunday May 26th, 2019

Awards Tent

Distribute door prizes to race participants and volunteers, post race results and answer general questions.

Aid Stations

Wake early and join the excitement on-course by handing out beverages to passing runners! Must be a part of the aid station sponsor group.

Course Marshals

Working at positions along the course, ensuring that the course is clear for runners, as well as cheering them on as they run by. Excellent opportunity for gaining volunteer hours needed for graduation. This role is one of the most important roles along the course!

Lead Cyclists

Cycle with the pack and help clear the path for runners.

Sweep Cyclists

Follow the last runners along the course, releasing course marshals along the way.

Start Line Crew

Help control traffic and set up the start line for our race participants.

Food Tent

Serve food to runners after the race in our Food Tent.

Finish Line Crew

Cutting off race timing chips immediately after the race, congratulate runners passing the finish line while handing out medals, handing out blankets to runners and walkers as needed.

Bag Check (Huntington Society's Bag Check)

Store and retrieve runner belongings on race day.

Massage Therapist

Providing massage to race participants. Must be a registered massage therapist.

Split Time/Verification

Recording numbers and calling times to runners/walkers.

Sign Crew

Setting directional signs on course for the participants.

Course Logistics Crew

Responsible for getting all equipment on and off course.

Finish Line Clean up Crew

Responsible for maintaining venue site.

T-shirt Exchange

Help distribute shirts and exchange shirts for runners who want to change sizes/race distance. 

Venue/Equipment Crew

Provide general help with overall equipment set up, heavy lifting required.

Committee/Board Opportunites

The Calgary Marathon Society is made up of staff and volunteer board and committee members. 

The CMS Volunteer Board meets 10 times a year and is focused on governance, developing long term strategy and creating future vision of the organization. Sub-committees meet monthly, quarterly or as needed.

The CMS Volunteer Committee is made up of coordinators, area captains and technical specialists and is focused on operations and execution of Race Week. All positions require some pre-planning, however it is varied and so is the level of commitment.

Group/Team Volunteer Opportunities

Groups & teams are eligible for an honourarium, the amount will not be confirmed until after the race weekend but is based on number of volunteers, hours and returning groups are given priority. Please DOWNLOAD the honourarium guide below, which is subject to change.

There are a variety of positions available as well as group and individual volunteer opportunities. Volunteering with the Scotiabank Calgary Marathon can be a great team-building exercise, a fun family bonding experience, a way to get credit for volunteer hours required for school and a new way to meet people.

Home Stay Information

We have so many elite athletes that come from all over the world that would much rather the warmth of a host family as opposed to staying in a hotel room during the Calgary Marathon Race Weekend. If you are interested in hosting an elite athlete please fill out the following form and someone will be in contact.

Awards Night

Be a part of the Run Calgary Awards Night honouring the year's best volunteers, fundraisers and athletes went the distance achieving their goals and overcoming obstacles along the way. 

The Volunteer Awards recognize and celebrate volunteer groups and individuals who participate as volunteers in The Scotiabank Calgary Marathon.  Awards will be distributed to volunteer groups and individuals meeting and exceeding the award criteria.

Run Calgary's committee, Board of Directors, and participants will cast their votes on the following criteria.

  • volunteer group (a club, society, charity, non-profit, school, college, university or association that is organized and operated without the purpose of making a profit).

  • provide a minimum of 8 or more volunteers;

  • create a fun and memorable experience for volunteers, officials, spectators, runners and community.

  • demonstrate community spirit and enthusiasm for the event, runners, and spectators;

  • uphold the values of the Society;

  • and demonstrate a commitment to the safety of runners, volunteers, spectators and other stakeholders.

This category will be all about the bragging rights and recognition!

 

Winners will be advised and notified in writing prior to the award presentation.

  • Awards will be presented after the marathon event at the Awards Night (date TBD)

  • Groups that qualify for an honourarium will be contacted within 30 days of the event.
